Post-Operative Instructions
Following Scaling and Root Planing
1. Refrain from eating until the local anesthetic has worn off and avoid hot foods or liquids the remainder of the day.
2. If necessary, an over the counter analgesic, such as Tylenol or Advil, may be taken for mild discomfort. Gum irritation and a heightened sensitivity to temperature changes can be expected but should dissipate within days.

3. Please resume bacterial infection control measures immediately. Initially, some tenderness to brushing (even with a soft bristled toothbrush) and flossing will be noted. However, as healing progresses, it will become easier to perform this task. Note: Healing will progress at a greater rate if plaque control is optimal.
4. Rinsing the mouth with warm salt water (1 teaspoon per 8 oz.) may be soothing or, alternatively, a 50:50 mixture of Listerine and water may also be used.
5. Smoking is strongly discouraged as it compromises plaque control measures and delays healing.
6. If you are concerned about your response to therapy, please call our office at (734) 981-7477.
