Post-Operative Instructions
Instructions After Periodontal Graft Surgery
FOODS: During the first 24 hours it is advisable to eat softer foods that require little chewing. You should stay away from the operated area(s) for a minimum of three weeks. When any sutures or dressings are removed we can advise you on when the areas can be used more normally.
DRINKS: Avoid hot liquids until all anesthetic effects are gone. Drink liquids that are comfortable to you. However, do not use a straw.
SMOKING: Do not! Bleeding and delayed healing often result.
RINSING: During the first 24 hours following surgery, rinsing should be avoided to reduce chances of bleeding. After 24 hours, it is important to gently rinse the surgical area with Listerine or Peridex (prescription). Also, the surgical area should be gently swabbed with mouth rinse using a cotton swab. Rinse and swab the area 2 to 3 times daily. Rinse areas at times other than when you have brushed your other teeth.
BRUSHING: The grafted area should not be brushed or flossed for at least three weeks. (Bone grafts and/or regenerative membranes may wait six weeks)
ACTIVITIES: We advise limited physical activities for 24 hours. Discomfort and chances of bleeding increase when activity levels rise. After 24 hours, listen to your body and adjust accordingly.

BLEEDING: A slight amount of blood is often seen during the first hour or two after surgery. However, if you find clots forming or a steady flow from any area, do not ignore it;
- wipe away any blood seen or felt
- place a dampened gauze on the inside and on the outside of the area
- apply finger pressure firmly, for 10 minutes
- if it is stubborn, repeat the process but use a moistened tea bag in place of gauze.
- if unsuccessful, contact the emergency number(s)
SWELLING: While not common, it does occur. If seen, place an ice pack over the area for a period of 20 minutes. Allow the area to rest, then repeat for another 20 minutes. When in doubt, contact a doctor.
DISCOMFORT: Be sure to use the prescribed medications according to their directions. If uncertain, contact your pharmacist or the doctor.
SUTURES: Non-dissolving sutures should be removed in approximately 7 days. Absorbable sutures will begin to dissolve in 4-8 days.
EMERGENCIES OR QUESTIONS: Contact the office at (734) 981-7477. When closed, further emergency numbers are given for Dr. Wunderlich or Dr.Chang.
