Brush Biopsy
Often suspicious spots or areas in the mouth can be screened by a process called a "Brush Biopsy". A small brush with tooth brush like bristles can comfortable remove enough cells to check for abnormalities. With computer enhancements the results are viewed by experts and the results sent to our office in about 7-10 days.
If there are any suspicious cells, then further testing (e.g., a more traditional surgical biopsy or removal) would be scheduled.
Brush biopsies on take a few minutes, generally require no anesthetic, and there are no restrictions or special precautions to take afterwards.
